According to current Republican doctrine, asking people to wear a mask for the sake of their fellow citizens is tantamount to fascism and forcing a 13-year-old rape victim to carry her baby to term is not. It’s always interesting what body parts Republicans think fall in the public domain.

The recent rash of incredibly restrictive abortion laws being passed by GOP legislatures, and signed by GOP governors, has been called a war on women, a war on reproductive rights, etc. All that’s true, but add to the list a war on the poor, because as we all know, restricting access to reproductive health care will have little to no effect on anyone with the means to simply travel to a state where abortion rights are guaranteed. These restrictions are an assault on people who don’t have the same privilege.

Abortion, for the time being, is a constitutional right. These attempts to strictly restrict access are designed to put that right in question. The sponsors of these laws feel like the makeup of the Supreme Court could be receptive to their argument and these aggressive restrictions are tailor-made to be challenged in lower courts with the express written plan to get their case before the court in hopes of overturning Roe.

It would be easier to take the Republicans’ performative pro-life legislation seriously if the party so concerned with their gestation gave a damn what happened after the babies are born. Congrats on the birth of your child, we’ll talk to you in a few years when we try to cancel their free school lunch program.
